AI’s Next Test Is Funding the Buildout

AI financing concerns are competing with inflation for investors’ attention, leaving technology shares under pressure despite a recovery in Treasuries. Strong semiconductor revenue expectations provide a counterweight, while today’s US data will test the durability of the retreat in yields and the dollar.

Wednesday’s inflation surprise has given investors another reason to examine the borrowing behind AI expansion, with CoreWeave’s rising debt-insurance costs sharpening that scrutiny. Early premarket indications showed CoreWeave down approximately 6.3%, Oracle 2.1%, Nvidia 1.8% and Micron 3.7%. September headline CPI rose 3.7% annually and core inflation reached 2.6%, complicating the Fed’s next decision. Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 futures are lower, while Dow futures advance, extending the market’s uneven treatment of technology and the broader economy. The US 10-year Treasury trades at 96.48 to yield 5.08%, with the 30-year yielding 5.43%. Lower government yields offer some relief, but companies seeking new capital still face the credit terms investors and lenders are willing to provide.

Overnight, Japan’s Nikkei fell 4.9% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng declined 1.03%, while European trading is mixed. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) reported quarterly revenue of $46.72 billion and projected $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion for the fourth quarter. Strong chip demand can coexist with weak investment returns for the businesses borrowing to deploy those chips—a distinction investors are now examining more closely. Energy markets face a separate policy development as Washington considers allowing previously sanctioned vessels to transport permitted oil cargoes, potentially easing freight costs; approval and restrictions elsewhere remain obstacles. Overnight oil indications placed Brent at $103.78 a barrel and WTI at $93.75, while the morning gold reference is $4,173.90 an ounce. For businesses exposed to international trade, the practical test is whether policy changes improve shipping availability and delivered costs.

The dollar is softer against major currencies, with EUR/USD at 1.1218, USD/JPY at 157.80, GBP/USD at 1.3258 and USD/CHF at 0.8296. USD/MXN stands at 18.4767 as the peso recovers modestly on the day, reducing the peso cost of dollar purchases while also trimming the local-currency proceeds of dollar receipts. Mexico’s exposure to US demand puts this morning’s US retail-sales release in focus. Brazil has already delivered a softer reading, with August retail sales rising 0.4% year over year against a 1.5% forecast, adding evidence of subdued retail demand alongside the global financing concerns. Digital assets remain under pressure, with Bitcoin at $80,895, Ethereum at $2,361.08 and Dogecoin at $0.080; USDT holds a rounded $1.00 quotation. For treasury teams, those currency and asset moves matter most when translated into the proceeds available for specific payment dates.

Ionfi | CIO — What to Watch Into the Close™

  • US data at 8:30 a.m. ET. Assess producer prices and retail sales together, then watch whether the initial Treasury and dollar reactions persist. Firmer inflation with resilient spending would present a different policy challenge from weakening demand.

  • Credit confirmation. If technology shares recover, look for stabilization in corporate bonds and default-protection costs. An equity rebound alone would leave the financing question unresolved.

  • Investment commitments. Watch for completed financing, revised capital-spending plans and changes to delivery schedules. Funding secured on workable terms would reduce concern about disruption to the buildout.

  • Mexico and Brazil. Watch the peso’s response to US retail sales and whether Brazil’s weaker-than-expected retail growth affects the real and local rate expectations. Assess each currency against the business’s net payment requirements.

Ionfi | Treasury Perspective™

For a major project or purchase, distinguish funding already committed from financing still expected to be raised. Where delivery depends on another party obtaining capital, review the contractual milestones and payment protections before treating the schedule as assured.
