The Market Is Auditing the AI Economy

Wall Street is no longer rewarding artificial-intelligence exposure on promise alone, as elevated financing costs and unforgiving earnings reactions force companies to demonstrate how investment becomes durable cash flow. Energy diplomacy is easing part of the inflation premium, but firm Treasury yields, elevated gold and selective market leadership show that financial conditions remain restrictive beneath the surface.

U.S. markets enter Thursday divided between record-level blue-chip strength and renewed scrutiny of the technology investment cycle. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed Wednesday at 54,349.12, while the S&P 500 finished at 7,723.55 and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,363.44; this morning, Dow futures are higher, S&P 500 futures are little changed to modestly positive and Nasdaq 100 futures are lower. Western Digital and Sandisk are falling sharply despite AI-supported revenue outlooks, underscoring that strong demand is no longer enough when valuations already assume exceptional execution, margins and returns. Software shares are also under pressure, while Moderna is gaining following regulatory approval of its flu vaccine for older adults and SpaceX is being tested by the expiration of its first post-IPO lockup on more than 900 million shares. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield has risen to approximately 4.65% and the 30-year to 5.20%, reinforcing the higher discount rate being applied to companies whose returns remain further in the future. Initial jobless claims, continuing claims and preliminary second-quarter productivity data are due at 8:30 a.m. ET, ahead of Friday’s July employment report.

Overnight markets are receiving measured inflation relief from energy without abandoning protection against geopolitical and policy uncertainty. European equities advanced on corporate earnings and hopes for progress around an Iran-Oman framework affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, while Asian markets absorbed the U.S. technology selloff, with South Korea’s semiconductor-heavy market declining sharply and Japan also trading lower. WTI crude is near $75.96 and Brent near $80.30 as diplomacy reduces the immediate supply premium, although unresolved shipping arrangements and regional security risks prevent markets from treating energy flows as fully normalized. COMEX gold remains firm near $4,321.20, supported by geopolitical hedging, easing oil-driven inflation concerns and less aggressive expectations for additional Federal Reserve tightening. The dollar remains broadly range-bound at EUR 1.1545, JPY 157.92, GBP 1.3464 and CHF 0.8097, while Bitcoin at $64,554 and Ethereum at $1,904.77 are holding their ranges without confirming a broader speculative breakout.

Mexico and Latin America are benefiting from more orderly energy and currency markets, but domestic policy flexibility remains closely tied to U.S. yields and the dollar. The Mexican peso is resilient near 17.2506 per dollar, while Banxico is widely expected to leave its policy rate unchanged at 6.50% later today as officials weigh materially improved headline inflation against persistent underlying price risks and uncertainty surrounding the durability of the economic rebound. Mexico’s economy expanded 1.5% in the second quarter after contracting during the first three months of the year, improving the near-term outlook without eliminating its exposure to U.S. trade, tariffs and financial conditions. Brazil lowered the Selic rate by 25 basis points to 14.00%, but persistent inflation expectations, fiscal concerns and a tight labor market argue for a measured easing path. Lower crude prices provide inflation relief to Chile and Peru, while Colombia, Brazil and Mexico must balance lower domestic energy costs against weaker commodity revenues. Regional assets remain orderly, but Friday’s U.S. employment report will determine whether Latin America receives genuine financial relief through lower Treasury yields and a softer dollar—or only temporary support from calmer oil markets.

Ionfi | CIO - What to Watch Into the Close

Watch the market’s reaction to the 8:30 a.m. labor and productivity releases rather than focusing solely on whether the figures beat or miss expectations. Gradual employment cooling accompanied by stronger productivity would support the soft-landing narrative, while weaker labor demand without efficiency gains could shift attention from inflation relief toward slower growth.

Nasdaq breadth will determine whether the morning’s weakness remains a controlled valuation reset or develops into a broader reduction in risk. The 10-year Treasury yield remains the key cross-asset threshold: movement toward 4.70% would reinforce the market’s demand for immediate earnings and cash flow, while a sustained retreat below 4.60% could stabilize technology valuations.

Oil, gold and the dollar should also be monitored together. Lower crude accompanied by stable gold and orderly currency markets would confirm that inflation pressure is easing without triggering a flight from risk; simultaneous reversals would suggest geopolitical uncertainty is returning faster than the headline indices reflect.

The market is not abandoning artificial intelligence. It is demanding a clearer accounting of how innovation is financed, when investment becomes cash flow and whether corporate balance sheets can remain flexible while waiting for the return.
