The Selloff Has a Blind Spot

A majority of S&P 500 constituents rose during Thursday’s index decline, exposing how heavily the largest stocks shaped the market’s headline performance. Fresh telecom developments, uneven consumer demand and distinct pressures in Mexico and Argentina show why business exposure deserves closer attention than broad market labels.

The S&P 500 fell 1.21% Thursday while a majority of its constituents rose. Its equal-weight ETF gained approximately 0.7%, and the Dow and Russell 2000 edged higher—a materially different picture from the Nasdaq Composite’s 2.60% decline. This morning brings a separate competitive shock. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile fall more than 3% following reports that SpaceX is exploring a nationwide wireless service; Crown Castle and American Tower gain approximately 8.5% and 5.6%. The proposed expansion could threaten established carriers while creating demand for tower infrastructure. Dow futures nevertheless lose 309 points, S&P 500 futures fall 20.50 and Nasdaq-100 futures slip 24.50. The index decline measures real losses, but it does not establish that earnings prospects are deteriorating across the board. Today’s more revealing test is whether the companies that held their ground continue attracting buyers.

Consumer demand also deserves a closer look. American Express reports an 8% increase in quarterly card spending, evidence of continued activity among its predominantly affluent customers. In Britain, September retail sales fell 0.4%, even as October’s preliminary composite purchasing managers’ index improved to 53.1 from 52.0; the eurozone’s corresponding index eased to 51.9 from 53.1. These readings cover different periods and activities, but together caution against describing overseas demand with a single label. The dollar is modestly firmer against most counterparts, with EUR/USD at 1.1196, USD/JPY at 156.85, GBP/USD at 1.3374 and USD/CHF at 0.8238. Brent stands at $114.28 a barrel amid Middle East supply concerns, with WTI at $101.08. For US multinationals, the earnings implications depend on which customers keep spending, where sales occur and how much higher energy costs absorb.

Mexico adds an important distinction within inflation itself. Thursday’s midmonth report showed headline inflation at 3.62% and core inflation at 3.78%, with the expiration of summer electricity subsidies in 18 cities contributing substantially to the noncore increase. Today’s activity release will add evidence on demand as USD/MXN trades at 18.7826. Argentina’s sovereign risk premium, meanwhile, closed Thursday at 704 basis points as dollar bonds weakened. US Treasuries retain much of Thursday’s gains, although yields have edged higher this morning: the 10-year note, displaying a 4.63% coupon, trades at 97.23 to yield 4.98%, while the 30-year yields 5.30%. Gold futures soften to $4,037.70; Bitcoin stands at $81,543, Ethereum at $2,391.65, Dogecoin at $0.080 and USDT at a rounded $1.00. Those divergent movements leave little support for treating every defensive asset, regional borrower or digital holding as responding to the same risk.

Ionfi | CIO — What to Watch Into the Close™

  • Participation beneath the index. Watch the equal-weight S&P 500 and advancing stocks alongside the headline benchmark. Widespread declines would weaken the case that pressure remains concentrated.

  • Demand and prices. US flash PMIs at 9:45 a.m. ET and final Michigan consumer sentiment at 10 a.m. ET will help assess business activity and inflation expectations ahead of the Fed meeting.

  • Telecom confirmation. Separate reported discussions from signed agreements. Follow whether the carrier–tower divergence holds as more details emerge.

  • Regional evidence. Read Mexico’s activity figures against its inflation breakdown, and watch whether Argentine sovereign spreads stabilize before the weekend.
