Why Gold Beat the Dow Before Breakfast

Dow futures jumped 892 points after Democrats won both chambers of Congress, yet gold futures posted the larger percentage gain. A softer dollar cushioned the rise for European buyers, but even in euros, an ounce of gold cost about 2.4% more by morning.

Anyone waking up on the East Coast could have missed an entire selloff. Nasdaq-100 futures fell as much as 2.4% overnight before recovering to 28,443.75, up 0.49%. Dow futures led the recovery at 52,787, up 1.72%, while S&P 500 futures gained 0.98% to 7,671.50. The VIX fell to 18.31 as traders priced in smaller swings over the next month. Bitcoin also rebounded from a six-week low to $78,201, with Ethereum at $2,316.60, Dogecoin at $0.075 and USDT at a rounded $1.00. Individual stocks told a more selective story. First Solar rose about 8%, and AMD gained roughly 6% after its data-center revenue nearly doubled. Applied Digital, which builds the facilities that house those chips, traded lower. Selling a processor and getting the next data center built are two different bets.

Put yourself on a European buying desk. COMEX gold rose 3.03% to $4,059.80 an ounce, while the euro gained 0.59% to $1.1259. The stronger euro absorbed only about a fifth of the increase. Lower Treasury yields also reduced the interest a buyer gave up by holding bullion. The U.S. 10-year, with a displayed 4.63% coupon, traded at 97.70 to yield 4.92%, while the 30-year traded at 97.42 to yield 5.30%. Sterling reached $1.3488, and the dollar bought 158.36 yen and 0.8159 Swiss francs. Oil went the other way. WTI fell to $94.46 a barrel and Brent to $101.54 as traders weighed Washington’s next move on Iran. Europe, meanwhile, reported October inflation of 4.0%, with energy prices up 20.8% from a year earlier. An oil trader could mark down the next barrel this morning. European households were still paying for the last one.

At 18.6677 pesos to the dollar, the same transfer looks different to the bank that processes it and the family that receives it. Banco de MĂŠxico reported $5.36 billion in September remittances, up 1.6% from a year earlier. After conversion into pesos and adjustment for inflation, economist Alberto Ramos estimates that their purchasing power fell 9.1% over the same period. A bank could report growth in the corridor while families receiving those dollars could afford less. In Brazil, the dollar bought 5.4728 reais ahead of today’s central-bank decision, while the 10-year government yield stood at 15.41%, up 121 basis points in a month. For a Brazilian importer, the stronger real made today’s dollar invoice cheaper. Financing a new facility for the next decade was a different conversation.

Ionfi | CIO — What to Watch Into the Close™

  • U.S. hiring and Treasury supply.

Compare the 2-year yield’s reaction to the 8:15 a.m. ET ADP payrolls release with the 30-year yield’s response around 8:30, when Treasury’s refunding announcement and the U.S. trade figures share the calendar. If the larger move comes at the long end, look first at the announced auction sizes.

  • Gold in euros at the U.S. close.

Run the morning calculation again. If the dollar recovers and gold holds most of its euro gain, currency translation alone still leaves part of the rally unexplained.

  • Brazil after the U.S. close.

Read Copom’s guidance alongside the month’s rise in the 10-year yield. For an institution funding in reais, the question is how much of any policy relief reaches the maturity at which it actually borrows. Banxico’s decision follows Thursday.
